I recently unknowing joined the 'someone has stolen/lost my locking wheel nut key' club, I found this website, they claim to be able to sell a replacement for 40, just need to send them two pictures, and proof of ID

https://www.lockingwheelnutkeys.co.uk/

They seem to have some good reviews on trustpilot, but I'd hope someone here might have some experience?

I've not used them myself, but I like the idea that they are responsible enough to demand ID.

They seem a little pricy though... Have you tried any other removal methods? What kind of lockers do you have?

If I was you once you've got these ones off, just go back to four standard nuts. The likelihood of your wheels getting nicked is extremely low compared to the likelihood of the locking ones seizing up one day and causing hassle, notwithstanding the situation you're already in!

The website looks legit with no obvious grammar mistakes and it has a phone number and address listed which is always a good sign.

But like has been said above what sort of lockers do you have? Ive had sucess in the past just smashing on this sort of socket and getting them off https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/160650974451

Im sure your local friendly tyre place would do it for a nominal fee probally even free if you need new tyres

Agreed, though I'd caveat that by saying that some areas do still suffer from wheel theft, and I have no idea whether it's endemic to North Yorkshire, (somehow I suspect not, but still) and whether this car is parked on the road, remote to his house, or whatever.

I was just surprised that they want £35 (or more) for the key, but then I suppose they're making them? Or are buying them from the manufacturers and making the typical 50-75% supplier markup?

I think it was my first Cougar that had Ford locking nuts but no key, there was however some info in amongst the handbook that I was able to take to Ford and buy the correct key. I seem to remember it was in a blue envelope.

Thanks for the responses guys.

It's the ford type that came with the car, I used to have the key, It was left in the ashtray, I can only assume at somepoint, probably at the last service someone forgot to put it back.

I called the Garage local to me, and they claimed they could get them off for 'about two hours labour to chisel them off' and then 90UKP for a replacement set... yeah right..

Since posting this I've been to the local tyre place and the guy there was musing on the idea of welding a socket to them... that seems a bit scary too. To be honest I dont think he was that interested as I was not in the market for new tyres.

I've had a look through the paperwork I have and I'm not able to find anything that seems to indicate a reference number, any idea what I should be looking for paperwork wise?

You'd be surprised at what the local Sheep get upto, Grand Theft Ruminant!

The card looks like this

As they are the originals which came with your vehicle there is a chance a Ford dealer could get the relevant info. if you provide them with the VIN no.

I had this problem with my first Cougar (Thought I was going to again yesterday but I found the key thank god)

Any chance you can get to Castleford?
There's a place there that manufacture tools to get them off, they charge a tenner to do it there and then while you wait.

I've not got anything like that card, I do have a card with a number for getting a new ignition key cut tho... along with the new used spare/second key mint in bag :)

I'm not even sure the locking nut looks like that, it's dark out now, but I'll take a picture in the morning.

I'm not that far from Castleford, but part of why I want the wheel off is that I need a tyre replaced.

Over the last few months, I've found two of these in the road. I assume, people ( like me ) just leave them on the wheel nut whilst moving the wrench around to tighten each nut in turn, and then just forget to remove it ?

However, I bought a similar pair of removal sockets from ScrewFix. They may be out of stock atm, as they don't seem to display anything you can't buy. They still show these, but the review ( singular ) isn't great...
